Author's note:This is the first part of my Matt focus fic! I had to split it in two because LJ would never post it all at once and it was suggested to break it down anyway for easier reading. Thanks Fred for the beta as always! I hope you enjoy, any mistakes are all mine.

It was a sunny afternoon and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, so where else would he be but outside?

He sat in his chair with his eyes staring in wonder, taking in the vast grounds of lush greenery that surrounded him. The birds were singing, everything was beautiful and so peaceful. He was content and wished that this could go on.

She had simply said:

“Tell me about him.”

So he had to relive those memories, to recall a life that had been nearly destroyed because he had been born in the wrong time. He closed his eyes and, all too easily, the nightmares of his own era came flooding back.

She poured him a cup of tea and it was then he allowed himself to finally open up, to tell her everything.

“He was born underground in the darkness of the shelters. At first he was like any child of our time, accustomed to the lack of light and the harsh environment, he lived in the darkness. It was a part of him and he embraced it, far too much for my liking.”

To say life was chaotic five hundred years into the future was an understatement. To say that people lived in hell would have been more accurate.

Gideon Anderson was born in what used to be called Oxford and was fortunate to have been brought into a small community of people, all of whom looked out for each other, who supported each other through the never-ending treks through the underground tunnels and shelters.

He was given what education they could in circumstances like that but when Gideon was 21, he was chosen by his family for a very special task. He was taught about something called ARC, which he recalled mentioned in stories as he was growing up and now this mythical place was believed to exist and there was a chance to save everyone.

It was but a simple task: he had to find the man who was said to have the last intact copies of the fabled ‘Temple Diaries’, a book written by a genius wizard of some kind. It seemed so preposterous to him at first, but the information about the diaries had come from a trustworthy source.  So Gideon and a few others travelled all over Britain looking for this man, they even crossed over to Ireland and after years of searching, it was Gideon who gave up all hope of ever finding him.

So he stayed in Ireland, where he found a new family. He met Niamh and fell in love and from that moment on, he decided that he wasn’t going to live on his own wandering aimlessly with no goal. He was never going to become a Loner either. The Loners were crazy and wild and just as likely to kill as the beasts were, and that was no life for anyone.

Niamh was a good woman, he loved her so dearly and she was a source of brightness and goodness in his hell and eventually, she gave him two beautiful miracles. Twins.

Caoimhe was born first and Matthew followed only a few minutes later, two wonderful lovely miracles.  At first their parents had worried about bringing such innocent lives into an existence like that, but when they held their twins for the first time, they were given hope. They had been given a reason to keep on going.

However as the years went by, there were some noticeable concerns about the youngest of the twins.  At first everyone thought Matt so charming, he had an ability to get people to instantly like him with his politeness and generosity—offering up his food and water to others who needed it more—but sometimes behind those intense blue eyes, there was a malice, a darkness that belied all that kindness.  He was also very persuasive, he had a knack for making people do things for him and he always got his own way, except when it concerned his sister. She was the only one who could ever say no to him.

One day, just after he turned eight years old, Matt had disappeared and caused a huge panic, especially for Caoimhe, who was frantic without her little brother, but when he returned it was even more shocking.

Matt was covered in blood, grinning a white toothy grin through the wet crimson dripping off him. The knife in his hand was broken and he was laughing as if something was extremely hilarious.  He had killed a predator… how no one knew exactly, but the small boy had managed to take down and kill one of the most deadly things on the entire planet.

“Matt!” Caoimhe cried and rushed up to him and wiped the blood off his face.

“It’s dead! Don’t worry!” he cheerfully replied.

Caoimhe shook her head and hugged him tightly.  “How could any of us not worry?  Why? Why did you do this?”

“I did it for you, I did it to protect you! You’re my sister!”

“For everyone else too…right?”

“Yeah. course.”  Matt’s response was far from sincere.

They stayed in Ireland for a number of years, but when news was brought to Gideon about the diaries, it was Niamh who encouraged him to follow up on it. The Temple Diaries had been found, along with the man who owned them, so they went back to England.

It was dangerous for just the four of them but there were small groups of people who would allow them to travel with them as it provided more security for the children, but even then it wasn’t easy.  They got to know the people, they formed friendships and trusts but they never lasted long.  Those new friends always died or they left, something always happened.

There were far more creatures and predators in England than there ever were in Ireland and most of their days were spent fleeing, running…  always running.

Shortly after Matthew and Caoimhe turned eleven, the man they had been seeking was found. It wasn’t by chance, as Gideon had to follow up numerous leads and certain parts of the country were completely uninhabitable and unpassable. The man was called Evan and he was the leader of a group of twenty people all of who had survived together for many years. There were no other communities as large as theirs.

He had the diaries and Gideon was offered the chance to read them.  Written in a scrawly hand—most of which was smudged or faded over the years—a young genius wrote of anomalies and of rifts in time. There was mention of convergence but the explanation of that was obscured by the many doodles and drawings that the author had decided to put in.  A lot of it was faded after so many years, water and other damage ruined some of the pages and those that were legible didn’t make a lot of sense.

“So the ARC does exist?”

Matt had asked the question and from there everything changed.  It was because of this book that Gideon’s family stayed with Evan and his community, and it was Gideon and the other men who planned to change the future.

They journeyed together for six years, perfecting a way to get into London and find this ARC, and during those years there were moments of great happiness.

But the happiness didn’t last and Matt was the reason.

Ever since his first kill, Matt had made several more attempts to seek the predators out, to do what he could to confront them instead of running away. He didn’t like running away.

Matt had a frightful temper at times. There was a rage, an anger inside him that only his sister could temper. With Caoimhe around, he was content and normal. He even smiled more, he joked a lot too. His twin grounded him, most of the time.

There were times when his temper got the best of him, and that was when he would go above ground looking for a fight. He liked it too much and he was often deemed a Loner by the others because of it. The young teen was eerily like the Loners at times, but it was his sister who kept him from turning away from everyone. She was the one who appealed to his softer side.

Then, one day, a vicious pack of predators, during the midst of the breeding season, killed Matt’s mother and sister. It was when they had to be above ground, to reach the next shelter, and it had caught everyone by surprise.

Matt even more so.

Gideon feared for his son, he wept for him which is more than what Matt ever did. Matt didn’t show his grief for his mother but the loss of his twin damaged him greatly. Matt didn’t cry because something had broken inside him. The only person Matt had ever really connected with was gone and she had taken with her everything good Matt had left inside him.  Gideon tried to help him, others did too, but Matt was empty except for the anger fuelled by his grief.

He lashed out, he resisted everything kind anyone tried to do for him and it didn’t win him many friends.

A week after his sister’s death, Matt reached his utmost low and nearly destroyed the rest of the community. He brought an entire nest of Burrowers down upon them, through carelessness or intent, they never found out, but he virtually destroyed half the underground shelter and nearly all of the water supply with fire.

He hurt people, he angered the family who had known him all his life and the result was a brutal fight with his father.  It was harsh, painful both physically and mentally, as father and son tried to outdo the other. Gideon barely kept up with Matt who was so energised with hate. He took a lot of abuse—from pounding fists to his face to the screaming agonised yells spitting hatred into his ears—but in the end it was Matt who gave up. It was Matt who stopped it when he stood over his dad seeing how bruised and bloodied he was.  He never apologised and he said nothing for a while as he simply stood and watched his father gasp for breath, ignoring Gideon’s reaching hand offering assistance.

He left and proved then that he was really a Loner.  Matt Anderson should be on his own, there was no place for him amongst other people.

Matt somehow survived on his own, he did what he wanted and when, he fought and killed, and he patched himself up if he got injured. He simply existed for there was nothing else for him except staying alive and venting the anger inside him. He came close to death many times yet he always managed to survive, however one predator attack left him in extremely bad shape. He’d lost a lot of blood and had several broken bones. There was no way he could live without help.

Against his better judgement, Matt searched for his family, not caring that he was leaving a trail for the creatures to follow.  Matt had passed out before he found them.

They found him before he could die.

Matt’s recovery was long and dangerous. It meant that he couldn’t be moved and with creatures smelling the blood and his scent, it wasn’t always possible. Surprisingly Matt did recover, thanks to the healing skills of one woman and the protection from the others. When he was able to move by himself, it appeared that he had changed. He was grateful, mostly to the young woman who had helped him.

Amelia was Evan’s daughter and because of Matt’s seemingly genuine affection and gratitude, she became smitten by him.  She knew what he had nearly cost the community and what he was capable of but she was the forgiving kind and wanted to help Matt. For the first time in a long while there was new hope as Matt Anderson began to change in her presence. There was hope for him, a wonderful hope that he could finally fit in for good and he could be a part of the family.

He mellowed a lot, he took far less risks and didn’t go chasing after the creatures nor did he purposely invite trouble. Matt stayed with Amelia and Gideon noticed the calming effect she had on him, very much like Caoimhe used to have. Matt needed someone to be his grounding rock, to centre him and Amelia was thought to be the one for him.

Amelia gave him everything, she poured all the goodness she had into helping him and loving him, it was soon honestly believed the two of them would start a family of their own one day. It appeared that Matt would finally find peace.

Amelia had allowed him to be her first.

That night had been quiet, free from signs of creatures or beasts and she had snuck away with him to one of the more intimate tunnels.  There Matthew lost himself within her, he took everything she was offering him except for her love.  He didn’t want that from her so in return he had devastatingly wrecked all her dreams of their future, throwing her down away from him and yelling at her for trying to make him forget.

He had been so angry, livid beyond all reason and he discarded her as if she was nothing more than useless meat.

“You’re not her! You could never be her so don’t you ever think you can replace her! No one can replace what I’ve lost! Do you understand me?”

Her cries of despair were what brought everyone rushing to her aid and all they saw was her curled up on the floor sobbing and Matt yelling at her for trying to kill his sister again.  Amelia was never the same after that, she was a faded version of herself and whilst there were no physical signs that Matt had hurt her, the emotional wounds were just as bad.

The others had enough and wanted nothing more to do with Matt Anderson. They wanted him gone.

Gideon paused for a moment. He leaned forward, picked up the cup and took a sip of his lukewarm tea. He didn’t care about the tea going cold, as his mind continued to wonder back to those years and to the time when he had to decide his son’s fate.

“You’re serious, Gideon? You want to take your son back to the past?”

“You don’t want him here, Evan!  We’ve all seen what he’s become and I never meant, nor do I want, my son to be like this! I don’t want my son to be a loner and the only way I can save him is to take him back to the past!  He hasn’t grieved for his mother and sister and this place is not allowing him to!  Evan, please, let me take my son and the diaries back to London to find the ARC! Let me take him to the past and change all of this!”

“Do you know what this entails. my friend?” Evan replied solemnly. “The plans we’ve taken years to construct will mean nothing if Matt goes through the anomaly! The others won’t like it, they won’t agree to do anything of benefit for him after what he did to Amelia! And I agree! Besides what makes you think that Matt will cope any better in the past? Should we inflict someone like your son on them?”

Gideon grabbed hold of his friend’s arm and squeezed tightly.

“He has hurt us all, Evan! I know this!” Gideon’s voice came close to breaking with every word he spoke. “I can’t undo what he did to your daughter, I hated what he did and how he treated her, how he’s been with all of us over the years, but you know there is still chance and if there is anyone who can get past the predators it’s him! Please, I beg you to give him the opportunity to go to the past, because I know we can change things. This time, this century is wrong for him, if Matt stays here, it will destroy him and everyone. There he can change, I can help him change.”

“Do you really think this?”

“He’s my son, Evan. He’s all I have left.”

Gideon came out of his trance and saw the concerned look on the woman’s face. He smiled and patted her hand that had been resting on his shoulder.  She smiled back and allowed him to carry on with his story.

It seemed that Evan and the other members of the group weren’t the only ones who objected to this idea. Matt resented it immediately. He said he wanted nothing to do with it and the harsh words of contempt and vulgarity he threw at his father did little to convince the other men about bringing him along.  So in the end, they proceeded with the original plan.

A few last details were finalised and so a group of six headed towards London, including Gideon. If there was nothing he could do for his son, then he was going to try to change things for everyone else.

London was not how it is now. It was barely recognisable, but a few landmarks of the old city still stood, albeit in utter ruins. Death hung in the air and anyone insane enough to be here were soon screaming in wails of agony as the predators fed on them or stole their body parts to feed their young. Sane people stayed away as it was the breeding ground for the predators.

It was insane and suicidal what they did, because the creatures were at the top of the food chain. There was no prey that escaped them.

So it was the same for Evan and his team. They thought they knew what they were doing, that there was some hope in hell that they would succeed but one by one they were disembowelled and torn to shreds and it took less than a couple of minutes.

Gideon was the last. At the moment when he saw four of the snarling drooling creatures around him, their stinking breaths panting on his face, he knew he was going to die as well. He realised how foolish and stupid they had been and he had closed his eyes and waited.

Diolch! I had only two thoughts about Matt's past (or the future in this case) One I'm already writing in my PPF and this one.

I just love the idea of wild feral Matt! :) Grrr!

Fabulous start.

You have me on the edge of my seat.

Hey Fifi!

Thanks so much for reading this! I hope the second part I post up tomorrow will be just as wibbly!

I had this whole idea of Matt being quite wild in his time, the loss of his twin sending him pretty crazy. Having seen Ciaran do crazy feral...I had to do this! He could do Matt like this so well!

Wizard Temple! lol yup.. I figured in the future the stories would put him in that kind of light!

I'm pleased you liked it.

What an intriguing background story about Matt!
Why he's so subdued, why he and Gideon went into the past.
basched From: basched Date: July 21st, 2012 06:57 pm (UTC) (Link)

Thank you!

I think Matt had to be very wild and dangerous in his own time, in order for him to be like he is in ours. I loved the idea and I really wanted to write and share this!

Thank you so much! :)

Ooh, cliffhanger! This is really good, very imaginative. Looking forward to the next part :-)

Hey Clea!

Thanks! This wasn't actually intended to be a cliff hanger, it just seemed the best place to split the story!

I'm pleased of everyone's reactions so far, and I really do hope the second part will be a fitting end. :)

Cheers so much! :)

intriguing backstory for Matt. Eek over his mother and sister. LOL over genius wizard Connor.

Thanks Kat!

I do so love the idea of feral Matt! I had to write it! I hope you'll like the second part.

Wizard genius Connor! Can just imagine him in a little pointy hat and doing magic tricks!

Though seriously, if the people in the future read his diaries, they might think of him as some kind of wizard!
